Welland is a city in the Regional Municipality of Niagara in southern Ontario Province in Canada .
Welland owes its development to its favorable location on the rail route between Toronto and Buffalo and the Welland Canal as a waterway.
The city is known for its large French- speaking population. Welland is one of the few parishes in southern Ontario where the proportion of French speakers exceeds the provincial average.
Welland is also the location of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment as part of the 31st Canadian Brigade faction, which corresponds to a light infantry.
Wellands' nickname is The Rose City . The residents of the city are known as Wellanders .
