Matthew "Matt" Ellis (born August 31, 1981 in Welland , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 360 games for the Detroit Red Wings , Los Angeles Kings and Buffalo Sabers in the course of his active career between 1998 and 2016 National Hockey League on the position of the left winger . But Ellis also spent a large part of his career in the American Hockey League , where he completed another 540 professional missions.

Career

Matt Ellis began his career in 1998 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with the Toronto St. Michael's Majors . From year to year he was able to increase his points yield and scored 38 goals and 51 assists in 66 games in his last season in the OHL . He was also the player with the best plus / minus value in the entire Canadian Hockey League together with Darryl Bootland .

In May 2002, he was signed by the Detroit Red Wings after he was not drafted by any NHL team . The 2002/03 season he spent in the East Coast Hockey League with the Toledo Storm , a farm team of the Detroit Red Wings. Ellis performed well and moved to the Grand Rapids Griffins , the AHL farm team of the Red Wings , for the 2003/04 season . There he showed his qualities as a two-way striker who acts both offensively and defensively. Every year he continued to improve and was named team captain of the Grand Rapids Griffins before the 2005/06 season . On December 18, 2006 he was appointed to the NHL roster of the Detroit Red Wings for the first time and came in the 2006/07 season to a total of 16 missions in the NHL.

For the 2007/08 season he was a permanent member of the Red Wings NHL squad, but was mostly only used when another player was injured. When he was supposed to be sent to the Griffins in the AHL in February 2008, he was put on the Waiver list by the Red Wings and before the deadline was up, the Los Angeles Kings took the chance and signed Ellis. In Los Angeles, he played 19 league games, but could not establish himself there, so that before the start of the 2008/09 season was again put on the waiver list and moved to the Buffalo Sabers. Ellis found himself for a few games in the AHL with the Portland Pirates , but ended up playing most of the season in the NHL with the Sabers.

The following seasons were marked by the constant change between AHL and NHL, before the Rochester Americans , the Sabers farm team since 2011, announced another contract extension in July 2015, which was only valid for the AHL. After the season he spent exclusively in Rochester, Ellis ended his active career shortly before his 35th birthday.
