Darryl Bootland (born November 2, 1981 in Schomberg , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey striker . He completed 32 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Detroit Red Wings and the New York Islanders and most recently played with the Orlando Solar Bears in the ECHL .

Career

Darryl Bootland began his career in 1998 with the Barrie Colts in the Canadian Junior League OHL , but was transferred to the Toronto St. Michael's Majors in his first year within the league . In its second season, Bootland established itself as one of the best players in Toronto with 24 goals and 30 assists , but the majors could not keep up with the league competition, won only 18 of the 68 games and finished penultimate in the league. After the season, Bootland was selected in the eighth round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft at position 252 by the Colorado Avalanche .

2000/01 was a much better season for the majors and they reached the playoffs thanks to the help of Darryl Bootland, who was the team's second best scorer with 65 points in 56 games . The following year he was even able to compete with the best players in the league. With 41 hits he was tenth in the OHL's list of goalscorers and with 97 points he was the sixth best scorer in the league.

Colorado decided against Bootland to give an NHL contract and so he signed with the Detroit Red Wings in the summer of 2002 . The 2002/03 season he spent then mainly in the Toledo Storm , the ECHL - farm team of the Red Wings, where he was able to convince and the jump in the subprime him AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins , another farm team of Detroit, succeeded. In 54 games he scored 12 goals for the Griffins in 2003/04 and he was appointed to the NHL squad of the Detroit Red Wings, for which he played 22 games in the same season and could score twice.

He completed the following two seasons completely in the AHL and was able to improve significantly, especially in the 2005/06 season with 27 goals and 29 assists. 2006/07 he finally came to another six NHL appearances for the Red Wings, but after the season his contract was not extended. At the time of his departure, Bootland was the Griffins player who played the most games, scored the most goals and received the most penalty minutes in their AHL history.

In the summer of 2007 Bootland received a contract with the New York Islanders , but apart from four appearances in the NHL, he was mainly used for their farm team, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers . In January 2008 he was transferred to the Anaheim Ducks and finished the season with the Portland Pirates in the AHL. After the end of the season, he had only four hits and 13 assists in 63 games and thus remained significantly behind the performance of recent years.

After initially not wanting to sign a team for the 2008/09 season, he finally received a trial contract with the Manitoba Moose from the AHL for 25 games shortly after the start of the season on October 7, 2008 . Bootland convinced with nine scorer points from 14 games, but due to the great competition in the squad, he was not used in eleven of the 25 games. When he was offered an extension of the trial contract for another 25 games in mid-December 2008, he turned it down and decided to move to Europe to EC Red Bull Salzburg . He started the 2009/10 season with the Kalamazoo Wings in the ECHL.

From February 1, 2010 Bootland was under contract with the Vienna Capitals , before he returned to North America in the summer and was signed in September 2010 by the Odessa Jackalopes from the Central Hockey League . After a renewed engagement with the Kalamazoo Wings from the ECHL, the Canadian returned to the Central Hockey League in July 2012 and signed a contract with the Allen Americans . After winning the Ray Miron President's Cup there with the team for two consecutive years , he returned to the ECHL in 2014 and initially signed a one-year contract with the Colorado Eagles . In 2017 he won the Kelly Cup with the Eagels . On September 21, 2017, Bootland signed a contract with the Orlando Solar Bears as a free agent . After playing 21 games, his contract was terminated on March 13, 2018 due to injury.
