The Toledo Walleye are an American ice hockey franchise based in Toledo , Ohio . It has been playing in the ECHL since 2009 , after the previous team, the Toledo Storm, had been inactive since 2007. The home games are played at the Huntington Center . The Walleye's cooperation partners are the Detroit Red Wings from the National Hockey League and the Grand Rapids Griffins from the American Hockey League .

history

The franchise was founded in 1991 under the name Toledo Storm . Under this name they won the Riley Cup in 1993 and 1994 . After the 2006/07 season, the franchise was dissolved and the previous home stadium, the Toledo Sports Arena, was torn down. After a two-seasons break, game operations were resumed for the 2009/10 season under the new name Toledo Walleye. Walleye is the English name for the American pikeperch , which is native to Lake Erie near Toledo . The Huntington Center , which opened in 2009, has 8,000 seats, almost 3,000 more spectators than the old arena.
