The Huntington Blizzard were an American ice hockey franchise based in Huntington , West Virginia . The venue for the Blizzard was the Big Sandy Superstore Arena .

history

The franchise was founded in 1993 and started its gaming operations in the ECHL. The head coach was J. Bob Kelly , who played for the Pittsburgh Penguins during his playing career. The franchise's first season was disappointing, with the team winning just 14 out of 68 games and finishing last in the West Division. Paul Pickard took over the Blizzard and led the team into the play-offs for the first time in the following season. Huntington failed in the first round against the Dayton Bombers . The following years were not crowned with success either, the Huntington Blizzard only reached the play-offs once until 1999. In the last season of the franchise, the Blizzard set a new record with 80 points in the regular season and finished second in the Northwest Division. In the first playoff round, however, they just failed against the Hampton Roads Admirals . The franchise was then dissolved and relocated to Beaumont , Texas , where a new franchise was founded under the name Texas Wildcatters .
