Geisecke is a district of the town of Schwerte in the Unna district in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany .

geography

Geisecke is located directly north of the Ruhr on the edge of the Sauerland . A few kilometers to the west is the city center of the city of Schwerte , to the north you come to the Dortmund district of Lichtendorf .

history

The life of the residents was shaped by agriculture well into the 19th century. A change in the type of employment only occurred with increasing industrialization.

Geisecke was initially integrated into the Westhofen Office, which was newly established at that time, in the course of a municipal reorganization . At that time, around 200 residents lived in Geisecke.

After the construction of the railway repair shop in nearby Schwerte -Est, the foundation stone for a marshalling yard in Geisecke was laid in 1912, which initially consisted of only two tracks. On October 1, 1913, the meanwhile huge marshalling yard in Geisecke with now 20 pairs of tracks was put into operation. Here 2000 wagons were shunted and 140 civil servants had a job. The station, known throughout Germany, was one of the most modern marshalling yards in the western industrial district. In 1916 the marshalling yard had its largest number of tracks ever: 42 pairs of tracks and stretched over 2.8 km in length and over 300 m in width in a northerly direction.

With the beginning of the Second World War , the meanwhile overgrown marshalling yard was put back into operation in December 1938 and January 1939. Construction trains with their troops moved in and put the entire site back into a usable condition. The marshalling yard once again became one of the largest marshalling yards of what was then the Deutsche Reichsbahn.

On May 17, 1943, the municipality was completely surprised by the tidal wave of the Ruhr after the Möhne dam was blown up .

After the Second World War, a brisk residential construction developed in the community with the reconstruction. The infrastructure was expanded and schools, kindergartens, sports facilities and volunteer fire brigades found new locations.

On January 1, 1975, Geiseckes was incorporated into Schwerte through the Ruhr Area Law on the occasion of the regional reform in North Rhine-Westphalia .

After 1975 Geisecke developed positively as a residential area. It ranks as one of the preferred residential areas in the region.
