history
The Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies from the ECHL were relocated to Stockton, California, and renamed Stockton Thunder in the summer of 2005. After finishing fifth and last place in the Pacific Division in their first season, the Thunder then qualified three times in a row for the playoffs for the Kelly Cup , but were eliminated in each of these three seasons in the second playoff round out. They were subject to the eventual champions Idaho Steelheads in the 2006/07 season and the Las Vegas Wranglers in the following two years . In the 2012/13 season , the seventh consecutive playoff participation succeeded in making it into the finals of the Kelly Cup for the first time, in which the team was defeated by the Reading Royals in five games .
In 2015, the Calgary Flames bought the team and swapped places with the Adirondack Flames from the AHL as part of a major restructuring of the American Hockey League (AHL) . As a result, the Stockton Heat play in the AHL, while the Adirondack Thunder were established as the successor to the Stockton Thunder.
