Jack Combs (born January 26, 1988 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with EC Bad Nauheim in the DEL2 since December 2019 .
Career
Junior time in the OHL
When Combs scored 58 goals in one season for the California Waves in the California Junior Ice Hockey League at the age of 16 , which is a record for this club, he was then one of the top three by the Kitchener Rangers for the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Hockey Junior Leagues of Canada, selected and signed for the 2004/2005 season.
After one season he moved within the OHL to the Saginaw Spirits , for whom he played the next four seasons. Jack was particularly successful in the 2007/08 season in which he, voted OHL Player of the Month for December 2007, was appointed to the 2008 OHL All-Star Team and was named the most improved player of the season by the OHL coaches . With 100 points, he was also the player with the highest points in his club. In the following season 2008/09 he was with 43 assists the best player of his club in this statistic and with 13 points Saginaws most successful scorer in the play-offs.
Success in the ECHL - first experiences abroad
In 2009 he took part in the Peoria Rivermen training camp . Jack Combs began his rookie season 2009/10 with the then ECHL farm team of the St. Louis Blues , the Alaska Aces . During the season he moved within the ECHL to the Trenton Devils , only to end the season with three appearances for Peoria Rivermen.
The 2010/11 season began Combs in the Central Hockey League (CHL) , a league that was integrated into the ECHL in 2014, with the Tulsa Oilers . With the Oilers, Chad Costello was his strike partner for the first time , with whom he should form a successful attacking duo several times in the course of his career. After being one of the CHL's top 10 scorers that season, Combs was loaned out by the AHL team Chicago Wolves for three games during the season. For the 2011/12 season he moved together with Costello to the ECHL team Colorado Eagles . After Combs established himself as the top scorer of the ECHL (37 points in 23 games) during the season, he moved back to the AHL in December 2011, this time to the Worcester Sharks .
Although he was able to achieve 30 points (16 goals) in 50 games of the season for the Sharks, he began the 2012/13 season again with the Colorado Eagles in the ECHL. Together with Costello he formed the top scorer duo of the league again, and both were then committed in December 2012 by the Bridgeport Sound Tigers from the AHL. After a rather disappointing season for the Sound Tigers, Combs from coach Scott Pellerin was exchanged for league rivals San Antonio Rampage in March 2013 . At the Texas club , Combs was still able to score 12 goals in 18 games.
Since San Antonio was a farm team of the Florida Panthers at the time, Combs was able to complete a trial training with the NHL team before the 2013/14 season, but the season began again with the Rampage in the AHL. During the season he was also used for the Cincinnati Cyclones , the then ECHL panther farm team, and was finally exchanged for Derek Nesbitt to the Oklahoma City Barons within the AHL in January 2014 .
For the 2014/15 season Combs left North America for the first time and began the season at Toros Neftekamsk from the second highest Russian ice hockey league , but moved back to North America at the start of the ECHL season in October and played together with Chad Costello for the newcomers Allen Americans from Texas. The duo was successful again this season and Combs was nominated as ECHL's top scorer for the ECHL All-Star Game in January 2015. But even before the All-Star Games were held, he accepted the offer from IF Björklöven from the second Swedish ice hockey league Allsvenskan and was therefore replaced by Olivier Archambault from the Alaska Aces for the event of the best league players . But Jack Combs did not stay long at his second stop in Europe either and returned to North America in February because of the limited time he did with the Swedish team. A return to the Allen Americans, who were successful this season and even won the championship in the end , was not possible because of the league's waiver transaction provisions - clubs with low scores have preferential rights - so he played with the ECHL teams Stockton Thunder and Cincinnati Cyclones finished. After this turbulent season for Combs, with games for five different teams in three countries, he was still able to take ninth place in the ECHL season scorer ranking after scoring 76 points (31 goals) in only 47 games.
After 18 club changes in seven years as a professional ice hockey player, he hoped to find stability in the organization of the New York Rangers for the 2015/16 season , especially in their AHL farm team, the Hartford Wolf Pack , which gave him due to his successful ECHL season committed. But here, too, it was like in almost every season, in Combs' missions for the Rangers ECHL team, the Greenville Swamp Rabbits from South Carolina , he was one of the top scorers, while he was on 4 points in the 18 games of the season for Hartford ( 2 goals) came.
Change to Europe
After refusing to move to Europe in the preseason, Combs wanted to try again in the 2016/17 season by offering the Fischtown Pinguins a trial engagement in the pre-season. The people in charge of the DEL newcomer from Bremerhaven then used him for the season preparation games in the first series of storms, in which Combs was able to recommend himself for another commitment. During the season, Jack Combs became the top scorer of the Pinguins and was involved in the successful season for the North Germans. At the end of the season Combs was even the top scorer in the entire league with 27 goals and was able to qualify with his club for the pre-playoffs.
At the beginning of May 2017, the Westphalian league rival Iserlohn Roosters announced the commitment of Combs for the 2017/18 season . He was also able to reach the pre-playoffs with the club from the Sauerland in his first season, with Combs with 34 points and 22 goals in the main round being the most successful player of his team in both ratings and again among the top 10 scorers in the DEL belonged to. Despite the performance shown, he did not receive a follow-up contract with the Roosters.
In October 2018 he was signed for the current season by the Swiss second division club EHC Kloten . At the beginning of the 2019/20 season he played with the Wichita Thunder in the ECHL before he received a fixed-term contract with EC Bad Nauheim in December 2019 .
