Chad Costello (born July 22, 1986 in Johnston , Iowa ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Krefeld Pinguine team from the German Ice Hockey League since 2018 .
Career
Junior and college leagues
Chad Costello began playing ice hockey in his hometown of Johnston at the age of three , where he played for various youth teams. For the 2002/03 season he joined the Illinois team from the neighboring state . A year later he returned to Iowa and played for the Des Moines Buccaneers in the United States Hockey League . Costello completed the next season in the North American Hockey League for the Wichita Falls Wildcats . In the 2005/06 season he was active for the Cedar Rapids Roughriders in the USHL and was top scorer of the league with 76 points in 59 games . He then played for Northeastern University in Hockey East . His first year was successful and Costello was elected to the Hockey East's all-rookie team. In his second season he could not confirm his achievements and received less and less time.
Success in the ECHL
Therefore, Costello decided to leave Northeastern University and signed a professional contract with the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the International Hockey League for the 2008/09 season . He then moved to the Central Hockey League for the Corpus Christi IceRays . There he scored 55 points in 57 games and signed for the next season with league rivals Tulsa Oilers . There he formed a successful attacking duo with Jack Combs . Because of their achievements, both players were given the opportunity to play some games in the American Hockey League . While Combs played for the Chicago Wolves , Costello was used for eight games for the Lake Erie Monsters . On August 18, 2011, both players signed with the Colorado Eagles from the ECHL . The duo was also very successful at the Eagles and both were among the best scorers in the ECHL. Therefore, both players were given AHL service times again. Combs even moved to the Worcester Sharks until the end of the season , while Costello came up with four games for the Springfield Falcons and seven for the Sharks. Even without Combs, Costello was able to confirm his excellent performance in the second half of the season and was named ECHL Most Valuable Player at the end of the season . The 2012/13 season began again with the Eagles. In December, Costello led the ECHL scorer ranking, followed by Jack Combs. The Bridgeport Sound Tigers from the AHL then signed the duo on December 18, 2012. In the Tigers they completed 21 and 22 games in which Costello and Combs could not convince, so Costello returned to the ECHL and Combs was transferred within the AHL.
In August 2013, Costello signed with St. Charles Chill in the CHL. After six games, he moved to Ontario Reign in the ECHL in November . There he played eight games before he was injured and was out until the end of the season. On October 16, 2014, the Allen Americans from ECHL signed Costello. Five days later, Jack Combs also signed with the Americans, so that both could play together again. Together they played 32 games until January 2015, when Combs, as the leader of the ECHL scorer ranking, moved to IF Björklöven in the second Swedish league HockeyAllsvenskan . Costello then took over the lead in the scorer ranking and held it until the end of the season, so that he was named ECHL Leading Scorer . With 125 points he was 45 points ahead of the runner-up. He also showed strong performances in the play-offs and finally won the Kelly Cup with his team . For the next season he was named captain of the Americans. Costello scored over 100 points again in the regular season and was the top scorer of the ECHL. This was followed by the award as Most Valuable Player. He also retained his dominance in the play-offs. He led his team to defend their title and was also named Kelly Cup Playoffs Most Valuable Player . In the 2016/17 season, Costello was able to defend his title as top scorer and MVP of the ECHL with 122 points. With his team, however, he was eliminated in the play-offs in the second round.
Change to the DEL
After three very successful years with numerous individual awards and two Kelly Cup victories, Costello decided on a new challenge and signed a trial contract with the Iserlohn Roosters from the German Ice Hockey League on May 21, 2017 . 19 days earlier, the Roosters signed Jack Combs, making Iserlohn the sixth team that Costello and Combs were under contract together. For the 2018/19 season, Costello switched to the Krefeld Pinguine team within the DEL . After he formed the league's most successful attack line together with Jacob Berglund and Daniel Pietta in the 2018/19 season , he was one of the most successful DEL scorers after the main round in the following season 2019/20 with 54 points.
