The 2016/17 season was the 29th season of the ECHL . All 27 teams played 72 games each in the regular season, which ran from October 14, 2016 to April 9, 2017. This was followed by the playoffs for the Kelly Cup , which the Colorado Eagles won for the first time in their history on June 5, 2017 .

Team changes

The Evansville IceMen have been relocated to Owensboro , Kentucky and will not start playing there until the start of the 2017/18 season, so the franchise is paused this season. In addition, various teams changed their cooperation partners from the American Hockey League and National Hockey League .

mode

The six divisions introduced only a year earlier have now become four again; the division into two conferences was retained. The four teams with the highest points in each division qualify for the playoffs. In the first two playoff rounds they first play off a division winner who then competes in the conference finals. In addition, the teams are no longer able to use their time-out after their own icing - similar to the American Hockey League .
