Joël Chouinard (born May 8, 1990 in Longueuil , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player . Since 2010 he has been under contract with the Colorado Avalanche from the National Hockey League and plays for their farm team , the Lake Erie Monsters , in the American Hockey League as defender .

Career

Joël Chouinard played from the 2006/07 season for the Victoriaville Tigres in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . In the 2008 NHL Entry Draft , the defender was selected in the sixth round at a total of 167th position by the Colorado Avalanche . Chouinard completed two more seasons in the highest junior league in Québec. At the end of the 2009/10 season , the Canadian was appointed to the LHJMQ First All-Star team after scoring 23 goals this season, making him the LHJMQ's most successful defender. In addition, Joël Chouinard was awarded the Paul Dumont Trophy as Personality of the Year . In recognition of his academic achievements, he was also proposed for the Marcel Robert Trophy, but Dominic Jalbert received the trophy .

On May 26, 2010, Chouinard signed a three-year entry - level contract with Colorado Avalanche. Chouinard took part in the Avalanche training camp, but was not nominated for the NHL team and spent the 2010/11 season with Colorado's farm team , the Lake Erie Monsters , in the American Hockey League .
