The Liechtenstein-Portuguese relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Liechtenstein and Portugal . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1992. You were already a partner u. a. in the Council of Europe and in the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe .

history

During the Second World War (1939–1945), both countries remained neutral and unaffected by direct warfare, which only very few European states achieved.

Liechtenstein and Portugal were both members of the EFTA from its establishment in 1960 until Portugal joined the EU in 1986.

On February 6, 1992 , the Portuguese ambassador to Switzerland, Octávio Neto Valério , became the first Portuguese diplomat to be accredited in Liechtenstein. Since then, both countries have had direct diplomatic relations.

The Portuguese ambassador to Bern , Paulo Tiago Jerónimo da Silva , has been accredited as Portuguese ambassador to Liechtenstein since March 13, 2015 . The Portuguese Consulate General in Zurich is also the consulate responsible for Liechtenstein.

Liechtenstein's interests in Portugal, as in all countries without their own Liechtenstein embassy, ​​are represented by the Swiss embassy there.

The Zurich office of the Portuguese Chamber of Foreign Trade AICEP also looks after Portuguese foreign trade with Liechtenstein.

The bilateral trade volume in 2015 was only 399,000 euros (2014: 683,000 euros, 2013: 391,000 euros, 2012: 598,000 euros, 2011: 1,285,000 euros). With this, Liechtenstein ranks 179th among the buyer countries and 155th among its supplier countries for Portugal. Products from both countries are also traded via intermediate stations in Switzerland and are therefore counted in the Portuguese-Swiss trade balance.

In 2015, Portugal exported goods and services worth 258,000 euros to Liechtenstein (2014: 346,000 euros, 2013: 248,000 euros, 2012: 329,000 euros, 2011: 692,000 euros), of which 41.9% were agricultural products, 34.0% food , 9.7% minerals and ores (especially granite and marble) and 3.5% machinery and equipment.

In the same period, Liechtenstein exported goods and services worth 141,000 euros to Portugal (2014: 337,000 euros, 2013: 143,000 euros, 2012: 269,000 euros, 2011: 593,000 euros), 67.2% of which were optical and precision instruments, 44 , 8% machines and devices, 14.1% chemical-pharmaceutical products and 8.9% plastic products.

Sports

The Liechtenstein national soccer team and the Portuguese national soccer team met for the first time in the 1996 European Championship qualification . On December 18, 1994 in Lisbon, the Liechtenstein team lost 8-0 to the hosts.

Of the seven matches that have taken place, Portugal has since won six games. In qualifying for the 2006 World Cup , Liechtenstein wrested a 2-2 draw from the Portuguese in Vaduz.

The Liechtenstein national goalkeeper Peter Jehle was in goal for the traditional Portuguese club Boavista Porto from 2006 to 2008 .
