The Portuguese-Czech relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Portugal and the Czech Republic . Historically, the two countries can look back on ties that have existed since the 18th century and have maintained renewed diplomatic relations since 1974.

Both countries are u. a. Partner in the European Union , the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and NATO . The Czech Republic has also been an observer in the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries since the end of 2016 , of which Portugal is a founding member.

In particular, the history of the Portuguese-Czech family Silva-Tarouca and the continuing interest in the Portuguese language in Czech educational and cultural institutions form essential elements of the bilateral relations between the two countries.

The high-ranking politician and committed botanist Ernst Emanuel von Silva-Tarouca had the old Průhonice Castle near Prague renovated and was co-founder of the adjacent 220 hectare park. The park, which was laid out between 1885 and 1917, was one of the most beautiful English gardens in Europe and was particularly known for its rhododendron collection.

In the 19th century, Portuguese visitors were regularly among the visitors to Karlovy Vary .

After the proclamation of the Republic of Portugal in 1910 and the establishment of democratic Czechoslovakia in 1918, the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1921. After 1937 they were interrupted. They were resumed after the Portuguese Carnation Revolution in 1974 and the end of the anti-communist authoritarian Estado Novo regime.

Since the end of the Eastern Bloc in 1989, relations between the two countries have steadily intensified, in particular through the efforts of Václav Havel and Mário Soares , who was also honored by the University of Prague.

On March 30, 2016, the Czech Republic applied for membership in the Community of Portuguese- Speaking Countries (CPLP) as an Associate Observer. The Portuguese cultural institute Instituto Camões runs a language center in Prague and supports a number of projects at schools and universities. In addition, the influential Portuguese Gulbenkian Foundation awards grants and promotes book purchases and translations. With Charles University in Prague , Masaryk University in Brno and Palacký University in Olomouc , the most important Czech universities have complete courses in Lusitan Studies and courses in the Portuguese language , Portuguese literature and Portuguese culture. The Portuguese national soccer team and the Czech national team have only met once so far, in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 .
