Thomas E. Dalton

Thomas Edgar Dalton (born May 5, 1864 in Waddington , New York , † after 1906) was an American educator and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Thomas Edgar Dalton, son of John Dalton (1819–1906) and his wife Margaret (1822–1912; maiden name: Monihon), was born in St. Lawrence County in 1864 during the Civil War and grew up there. His father was born in Ireland . He came to the United States when he was very young. The Dalton family settled on a farm near Waddington, St. Lawrence County. His father married his mother in 1857. Thomas Edgar Dalton had five siblings. He attended the local schools. He then went to St. Lawrence University , where he made his Bachelor of Science in 1887 . He then moved to the Arizona Territory to a job as principal of the public school in Phoenix ( Maricopa County ) to compete. Dalton held the post for five years until he stepped down in 1893. Two school buildings were built during his tenure.

He then went into real estate and insurance business until 1895. He then founded the Phoenix Stationery and News Company together with two partners , of which he became president.

In 1894 he ran unsuccessfully for the Arizona legislature. On 11 May 1896 it appointed governor of Arizona Territory Benjamin Joseph Franklin for Superintendent of Public Instruction from the Arizona Territory. He held the post until his resignation on March 2, 1897.
