Nelson G. Layton

Nelson G. Layton (born August 8, 1852 in Indiana , † June 5, 1925 in Prescott , Arizona ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ).

Life

Nelson G. Layton attended local Indiana public schools. His youth was overshadowed by the civil war. Layton worked as a clerk until 1880 when he left the state . He moved to Colorado and settled there in Salida ( Chaffee County ) down. After his arrival he worked in his brother's business. In 1883 he moved to the Arizona Territory and settled in Flagstaff ( Coconino County ). Layton stayed there for the rest of his professional life. He worked for the Arizona Lumber Company until 1893 . In 1893 he was elected justice of the peace. Layton successfully ran for the joint post of Probate Judge of Coconino County and Superintendent of Schools of Coconino County in 1895. He was re-elected in 1896, 1898 and 1900. In 1902 he became Superintendent of Public Instruction of the Arizona Territory and held the post until January 1, 1906. After his tenure ended, he returned to Flagstaff, where he served as a district judge and clerk at the court. Layton was again Superintendent of Schools of Coconino County in 1912 - a post he held until 1915. On January 1, 1915, he became a City of Flagstaff Police Magistrate .

After his death, he was buried in the Arizona Pioneers Home Cemetery in Prescott.
