Sarah Folsom

Sarah May Folsom (born October 22, 1915 in Notasulga , Alabama , † June 12, 1969 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American teacher and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Sarah May Blanton, daughter of Elza Ernest Blanton (1887-1970) and his wife Bessie Lanier (1889-1972; maiden name: May), was born in 1915 in Notasulga. She had at least four siblings. Her childhood was overshadowed by the First World War and her youth by the Great Depression . She graduated from Judson College, Alabama, with a BA in French, English and History in 1936 . In 1941 she made a Master of Arts in English from Auburn University . She received honorary degrees from both Judson College and Auburn University in 1966.

Between 1936 and 1953 she taught in elementary schools, high schools and colleges. During this time she married Douglas L. Folsom junior (1915-2002) in 1940. Both taught at a school in Alabama. From July 1943 to February 1946, her husband served in the US Navy . After his retirement, they moved to Arizona and settled in Tucson ( Pima County down). After a year they moved to Prescott ( Yavapai County ).

Blanton ran successfully in the fall of 1952 elections for the post of Superintendent of Yavapai County.

In the fall of 1964 election, she was elected Superintendent of Public Instruction of Arizona . Blanton took up her new post in early 1965. She was re-elected twice in a row and held the post until her death in 1969.

After her death, she was buried in Mountain View Cemetery , Prescott.
