Weldon P. Shofstall
Weldon Perry Shofstall (born 1903 in Leonard , Missouri , † February 5, 1994 in Tempe , Arizona ) was an American teacher and politician ( Republican Party ). He was a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma .
Career
Weldon Perry Shofstall, son of Lionel Martin Shofstall († 1968) and his wife Salome (1887–1964; maiden name: Perry), was born in Leonard ( Shelby County ). His father was born there too. Weldon Perry Shofstall had a brother named Waymond Orlando and a sister named Naomi Delta (1907-2000). His youth were overshadowed by the First World War .
In the late 1920s / early 1930s he married Dorothy May Johnson (* 1904). Both attended university near Kirksville , the administrative seat of Adair County, Missouri. After receiving their degrees, they got married.
Shofstall received his Ph.D. in 1932. in Education from the University of Missouri . He was Superintendent of Schools in Memphis and Missouri. The family last moved to Columbia, Missouri. There he took up a position as research director and Dean of Administratin at Stephens College - a position which he held until 1946.
According to the 1940 census, he had an eight-year-old daughter and two foster children.
From 1947 to 1950 he worked as a consultant for the United States Armed Forces in Europe . During this time he was involved in the “German Youth Activities” campaign. In 1950 he moved with his family from Frankfurt am Main ( West Germany ) to Phoenix (Arizona).
He was Dean of Students at Arizona State University .
His father died on December 31, 1968 at the age of 86 in Tempe, Maricopa County while visiting his son over the Christmas holidays .
On August 1, 1969, he was named Superintendent of Public Instruction of Arizona to fill the vacancy created by the death of Sarah Folsom . In the fall of 1970 elections, he was elected Superintendent of Public Instruction for a full four-year term. He held the post until January 1975.
Shofstall died in Tempe in 1994 at the age of 90.
