Frethias Jefferson Netherton

Frethias Jefferson Netherton (born March 7, 1865 in Byron , California , † June 30, 1897 in the Arizona Territory ) was an American educator and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Frethias Jefferson Netherton, son of John Smith Netherton (1835-1921) and his wife Matilda Ann (1839-1912; maiden name: Estes), was born in Contra Costa County in 1865 , a few weeks before the end of the Civil War . He spent the first 19 years of his life on his father's 480  acre farm. Netherton attended public schools. He started attending Oakland High School at the age of 19 . In 1887 he graduated from there. Shortly thereafter, he started working for the Oakland Enquirer , a daily newspaper in California.

In the fall of 1888 he moved to the Arizona Territory to there for the position of Principal at the public school of Mesa ( Maricopa County to compete). Netherton held the post for five years.

He gave up his post as him the Governor of Arizona Territory LC Hughes on April 13, 1893. Superintendent of Public Instruction appointed by the Arizona Territory.

During his tenure, Netherton was unanimously elected twice, in 1893 and 1894, to head the newly formed Teachers' Association . In 1894 he attended the National Education Association conference in New Jersey . Netherton was Territorial Manager for the National Education Association of the Arizona Territory in 1893 and 1894.

During his tenure as Superintendent of Public Instruction, he was also the major shareholder and director of Mesa Free Press , a weekly newspaper. He is credited with drafting and passing the Education Acts by the 18th Assembly in 1895. Netherton conducted his official business from Mesa.

On June 30, 1897, at the age of 32, he died of a fall from his horse. He was buried in Union Cemetery in Brentwood, California.
