The Adair County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Missouri . In 2010 , the county had 25,607 residents and a population density of 17.4 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Kirksville , named after Jesse Kirk , an early settler in the area.

The county is located almost in the far north of Missouri and about 25 miles from Iowa . It has an area of 1475 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. The following neighboring counties border Adair County:

history
Adair County was formed on January 29, 1841 from parts of Macon County. Like Adair County in Kentucky, it was named after John Adair (1757–1840), a former governor of Kentucky and general in the war of 1812 .
The first permanent settlement began in 1828, 25 years after the Louisiana Purchase . Most of the settlers were from Kentucky . The first settlement was about 10 km west of Kirksville, along the Cariton River .
