The Ste. Genevieve County was formed in 1812. It was named, like the district capital, Sainte Genevieve, after the French district that used to exist here and was named after Genevieve , the patron saint of Paris .

Two places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , Louis Bolduc House and Ste. Genevieve Historic District . Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 6, 2018).

According to the 2010 census , the Ste. Genevieve County 18,145 people in 7,369 households. The population density was 13.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.42 people each in the 7,369 households.
