The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Centerville , which was named after its central location in the county at the time.

Reynolds County was formed in 1845. It was named after Thomas Reynolds (1796-1844), the seventh governor of Missouri (1841-1845).
Demographic data
As of the 2010 census , Reynolds County had 6,696 people in 2,878 households. The population density was 3.2 people per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.27 people lived in each of the 2,878 households.
The racial the population was composed of 96.5 percent white, 1.0 percent African American, 0.7 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.2 percent of the population.
