DeKalb County was formed from parts of Clinton County on February 25th. It was named after Johann de Kalb (1721-1780), a German-born general in the Continental Army in the American War of Independence .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , DeKalb County had 12,892 people in 3,961 households. The population density was 11.7 people per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.47 people lived in the 3,961 households.
The racial the population was composed of 86.6 percent white, 11.7 percent African American, 0.5 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.8 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.9 percent of the population.
