The county is located in southwest Missouri at the foot of the Ozark Plateau and is about 25 miles south of Arkansas . It has an area of 1318 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. The following neighboring counties border Carter County:

Carter County was formed on May 10, 1859 from former parts of Ripley County and Shannon County. It was named after Zimri A. Carter , an early settler in the area who came here from South Carolina as early as 1812 .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , Carter County had 6,265 people in 2,435 households. The population density was 4.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.52 people lived in each of the 2,435 households.
The racial the population was composed of 96.6 percent white, 0.1 percent African American, 1.1 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.7 percent of the population.
24.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 59.2 percent were between 18 and 64 and 16.6 percent were 65 years or older. 51.2 percent of the population was female.
