Cass County was formed on March 3, 1835 as Van Buren County from parts of Jackson County. In 1848 it was renamed Cass County, named after Lewis Cass , a US Senator and presidential candidate .
Demographic data
As of the 2010 census , Cass County had 99,478 people in 35,957 households. The population density was 55 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.68 people lived in each of the 35,957 households.
The racial the population was composed of 91.7 percent white, 3.5 percent African American, 0.5 percent Native American, 0.6 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 2.0 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.0 percent of the population regardless of ethnicity.
26.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 61.6 percent were between 18 and 64 and 11.9 percent were 65 years or older. 50.7 percent of the population was female.
