Cole County was formed on November 16, 1820 from parts of Cooper County. It was named after Captain Stephen Cole , an early pioneer in the area.

According to the 2010 census , Cole County had 75,990 people in 29,111 households. The population density was 74.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.39 people in each of the 29,111 households.

The racial the population was composed of 85.1 percent white, 11.5 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 1.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.7 percent were descended from two or more races.
