Phelps County was formed in 1857. It was named after John S. Phelps (1814–1886), a member of the US House of Representatives (1845–1863) and from 1877 to 1981 incumbent 23rd governor of Missouri.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , Phelps County had 45,156 people in 16,726 households. The population density was 25.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.44 people lived in the 16,726 households.
The racial the population was composed of 91.6 percent white, 2.5 percent African American, 0.7 percent Native American, 3.0 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 2.1 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 2.2 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
21.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 64.7 percent were between 18 and 64 and 13.8 percent were 65 years or older. 47.9 percent of the population was female.
