The county is located on the northeastern edge of the Ozark Plateau and is traversed by the upper reaches of the St. Francis River . St. Francois County was formed in 1821. It was named after the Saint Francis River, which was named after Francis of Assisi , the founder of the Order of Friars Minor .

Eleven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 6, 2018).

According to the 2010 census , St. Francois County's population was 65,359 in 24,122 households. The population density was 56.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.39 people each in the 24,122 households.
