geography
The county is located on the northeastern edge of the Ozark Plateau and is traversed by the upper reaches of the St. Francis River . It is located about 40 km west of the Mississippi , which forms the border with Illinois , and has an area of 1,172 square kilometers, of which 8 square kilometers are water. St. Francois County was formed in 1821. It was named after the Saint Francis River, which was named after Francis of Assisi , the founder of the Order of Friars Minor .
Eleven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 6, 2018).

According to the 2010 census , St. Francois County's population was 65,359 in 24,122 households. The population density was 56.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.39 people each in the 24,122 households.
The racial the population was composed of 93.6 percent white, 4.2 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.2 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.2 percent of the population.
