The county is located in southeast Missouri on the eastern edge of the Ozark Plateau , is about 50 km from Arkansas in the south and has an area of ​​2005 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers are water.

Wayne County is traversed by the St. Francis River , which is dammed on the border of Butler County to Lake Wappapello .

A. Wayne

The first white settlers came to what is now Wayne County from the eastern United States around 1800. The first settlements were the still existing places Patterson and Greenville , which were formally subordinate to the then still ruling Spanish colonial authorities.

Wayne County was formed in 1818 from parts of Cape Girardeau County and Lawrence County in what was then the Missouri Territory . It was named after General Anthony Wayne (1745–1796), a general in the Continental Army in the American War of Independence .

In 1943, the Wappapello Dam was completed, creating Lake Wappapello.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census , Wayne County had 13,521 people in 5,838 households. The population density was 6.9 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 97.2 percent white, 0.3 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.0 percent of the population.

Statistically, 2.29 people lived in each of the 5838 households.

20.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 57.8 percent were between 18 and 64 and 21.4 percent were 65 years or older. 49.9 percent of the population was female.
