The county is located in the so-called Missouri Bootheel in the extreme southeast of the state on the Mississippi , which forms the border with Tennessee . To the south, the county borders on the neighboring state of Arkansas . Pemiscot County covers an area of 1,327 square kilometers, of which 50 square kilometers are water. history
Pemiscot County was formed on February 15, 1851 from former parts of New Madrid County. It was named after the Indian expression for liquid mud .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , Pemiscot County had 18,296 people in 7,607 households. The population density was 14.3 people per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.39 people lived in 7,607 households.
The racial the population was composed of 70.4 percent white, 26.8 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.5 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.9 percent of the population.
27.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 57.8 percent were between 18 and 64 and 14.7 percent were 65 years or older. 52.5 percent of the population was female.
