The area of ​​what is now Atchison County was ceded to the United States by the Indians who had previously settled there in 1836 as part of the Platte Purchase and in 1837 it was added to the State of Missouri.

Atchison County was formed on February 23, 1843 from former parts of the then larger Holt County. The newly formed county was named after David Rice Atchison (1807-1886), a US Senator from Missouri.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census , Atchison County had 5,685 people in 2,474 households. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer.
