McDonald County was formed in 1849 on what was once part of Newton County. It was named after Alexander McDonald , an officer in the American Revolutionary War .

According to the 2010 census , McDonald County's 23,083 people were living in 8,057 households. The population density was 16.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. In the 8,057 households there were statistically 2.84 people each.
