Marion County was formed in 1826 from former parts of Ralls County. It was named after Francis Marion (1732–1795), a general in the American War of Independence .

One place has National Historic Landmark status , the Mark Twain Boyhood Home .

As of the 2010 census , there were 28,781 people in 11,462 households in Marion County. The population density was 25.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.36 people lived in 11,462 households.
