Hannibal is a city in the US state of Missouri in the counties Marion County and Ralls County . It is on the Mississippi River . The city has 17,757 inhabitants (as of 2000) and an area of 39.1 square kilometers.
history
Hannibal is the hometown of the American writer Mark Twain , who spent his childhood and youth here. In Hannibal Journal that his brother Orion Clemens belonged, Twain wrote his first newspaper article. The Journal also published his first own drawing in 1851, A Gallant Fireman ("A Friendly Fireman").
In Twain's books about Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn , Hannibal served as a template for the fictional village of St. Petersburg . In Tom Sawyer is told that Tom should emphasize a fence, he this task but clever by eluded that he einredete the village boys, the strike was a special pleasure to it all wanted to try. As a reminder of this, a fence painting competition takes place every year in Hannibal.
The city finds mention in the Broadway - musical Damn Yankees (1955).
Hannibal is home to Missouri's oldest newspaper, The Hannibal Courier-Post , which has been published since 1837 and has a daily circulation of 12,000 copies.
