George Poage
George Poage ( George Coleman Poage ; born November 6, 1880 in Hannibal , Missouri , † April 11, 1962 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American athlete .
The graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Madison won bronze in the 400-meter hurdles and in the 200 m hurdles at the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis . He was the first African American medalist in athletics at the Olympics. Over 60 m he was eliminated in the preliminary run, over 400 m he was sixth.
