The St. Charles County was founded in 1812. It was named, like the district capital of Saint Charles, after the former Spanish district of San Carlos , then named after Carlo Borromeo (1538–1584), a saint of the Roman Catholic Church.

The city of St. Charles was the first capital of the state of Missouri and is still home to the First State Capitol today .
