The county is located in northeast central Missouri on the left bank of the Missouri River and is approximately 50 km to the east from the US state of Illinois and the Mississippi River . history
Montgomery County was formed on December 14, 1818 from parts of St. Charles County. It was named after Richard Montgomery (1736-1775), who was killed in the American Revolutionary War during the attack on the Canadian city of Quebec .
One site has National Historic Landmark status , the Graham Cave archaeological site .
