Howell County was formed on March 2, 1857 from parts of Oregon County . It was named after Josiah Howell , who built the first settlement here.
The first county assembly was held in a log cabin in 1876, about two kilometers east of West Plains. The first prison, built of wood, was destroyed in 1862 during the Civil War. In 1866, all county records were destroyed in a fire. A new courthouse was built in West Plains in 1869.
Demographic data
After the census in 2010 40,400 people lived in Howell County in 15,404 households. The population density was 16.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.56 people lived in 15,404 households.
The racial the population was composed of 96.6 percent white, 0.5 percent African American, 0.7 percent Native American, 0.6 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.5 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.7 percent of the population.
24.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 58.0 percent were between 18 and 64 and 17.4 percent were 65 years or older. 51.5 percent of the population was female.
