Benton County was formed on January 3, 1835, from former parts of Pettis and St. Clair Counties. It was named after Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858), a longtime US Senator from Missouri (1821-1851).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census , Benton County had 19,056 people in 8,105 households. The population density was 10.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.22 people lived in each of the 8,105 households.

The racial the population was composed of 97.1 percent white, 0.3 percent African American, 0.6 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.3 percent were descended from two or more races.
