Franklin County was formed on December 11, 1818 from former parts of St. Louis County. It was named after Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790), one of the founding fathers of the United States.
60 buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 5, 2018).
Demographic data
As of the 2010 census , Franklin County had 101,492 people in 38,104 households. The population density was 42.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.60 people lived in each of the 38,104 households.
The racial the population was composed of 96.8 percent white, 0.8 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.2 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.4 percent of the population.
24.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 61.5 percent were between 18 and 64 and 13.8 percent were 65 years or older. 50.4 percent of the population was female.
