Barton County was formed on December 12, 1855 from parts of Jasper County. It was named after David Barton (1783-1837), a US Senator from Missouri (1821-1831).

One of the county's best-known citizens was Harry S. Truman (1884–1972), the 33rd President of the United States, who was born in Lamar.

Demographic data

As of the 2010 census , Barton County had 12,402 people in 4,949 households. The population density was 8.1 people per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.54 people lived in each of the 4,949 households.

The racial the population was composed of 95.0 percent white, 0.4 percent African American, 1.1 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 2.5 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.9 percent of the population.

25.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 56.9 percent were between 18 and 64 and 17.2 percent were 65 years or older. 50.7 percent of the population was female.
