The Lewis County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Missouri . In 2010 the county had 10,211 residents and a population density of 7.8 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Monticello , which was named after the country house of Thomas Jefferson .
geography
The county is almost in the extreme northeast of Missouri and borders in the east - separated by the Mississippi - on Illinois ; the Iowa border is around 20 km north. Lewis County was formed in 1833 from former parts of Marion County. It was named after Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809), a pioneer and explorer and later governor of the Louisiana Territory (1808-1809).
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , Lewis County had 10,211 people in 3,882 households. The population density was 7.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.37 people lived in the 3,882 households.
The racial the population was composed of 94.4 percent white, 3.2 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.4 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.6 percent of the population.
23.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.2 percent were between 18 and 64 and 16.3 percent were 65 years or older. 49.9 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was 37,721 USD . The per capita income was $ 18,916. 19.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
