Lincoln County was formed in 1818 from former parts of St. Charles County. The county was named after Benjamin Lincoln (1733-1810), who fought as a general in the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War and from 1788 to 1789 was Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts .

Five buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 6, 2018).

As of the 2010 census , Lincoln County had 52,566 people in 15,700 households. The population density was 32.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 3.21 people lived in each of the 15,700 households.

The racial the population was composed of 95.0 percent white, 1.9 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.8 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.0 percent of the population.

28.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 61.1 percent were between 18 and 64 and 10.9 percent were 65 years or older. 50.1 percent of the population was female.
