The county is located in the so-called Missouri Bootheel in the extreme southeast of the state on the Mississippi , which forms the border with Kentucky and Tennessee . New Madrid County was formed in 1812. It was named after the Spanish district during the rule of the Spaniards. At that time the district was called Nuevo Madrid . In the 19th century the area was known for the many earthquakes and the great New Madrid earthquake of 1811 , which had reached magnitude 7.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , New Madrid County had 18,956 people in 8,082 households. The population density was 10.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.19 people lived in each of the 8,082 households.
The racial the population was composed of 81.7 percent white, 15.8 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.5 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.1 percent of the population.
23.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.1 percent were between 18 and 64 and 16.1 percent were 65 years or older. 52.0 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was 34,332 USD . The per capita income was $ 18,412. 22.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
