Newton County was formed in 1838. It was named after John Newton (1755-1780), a hero and officer in the American Revolutionary War .

There is a national monument in the county , the George Washington Carver National Monument . Twelve buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 3, 2018).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census , Newton County had 58,114 people in 21,618 households. The population density was 35.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.63 people lived in each of the 21,618 households.

The racial the population was composed of 91.3 percent white, 1.0 percent African American, 2.3 percent Native American, 1.5 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 2.9 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.7 percent of the population.
