Wright County was formed in 1861. It was named after Silas Wright (1795–1847), a member of the US House of Representatives (1827–1829), US Senator (1833–1844) and Governor of New York (1845–1846).

One place has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Laura Ingalls Wilder House .

As of the 2010 census , Wright County had 18,815 people in 7,499 households. The population density was 10.7 inhabitants per square kilometer.
