action

Isabel Fuentes is an American of Mexican descent. She spends a lot of time in Mexico, where her family lives. In her hometown of Las Vegas , she meets the New York-born construction manager Alex Whitman, who is building a club building in the queue for the toilet of a bar.

Isabel spends a night with Alex and disappears. After three months, she visits Alex again to tell him that she is pregnant. Later Alex is warmly welcomed by the Fuentes and introduced as Isabel's friend.

Isabel and Alex get married in a simple wedding chapel in Las Vegas without Isabel's parents. The wedding is initially kept secret from Alex's parents. Isabel's father is angry about this and says that Alex acted more like a thief than a man because he did not formally ask for Isabel's hand.

When the two surprisingly get a visit from Alex's parents, they are initially led to believe that Isabel is a domestic help. Angrily, Isabel then forces Alex to tell the truth, which the parents receive in shock.

Isabel takes him to the Grand Canyon on his birthday . It tells a story about a family of squirrels whose descendants developed differently on both sides of the canyon and would still belong to one family, even though they are spatially separated by the canyon. Alex sees the story as an indication of the cultural differences in his marriage. Isabel says she would be moving to New York if Alex stayed in Las Vegas until the baby was born in October.

The building in Las Vegas will be completed in July, and Alex will immediately take over the next construction site in Manhattan, a job he has been working towards for a long time. Isabel does not find out about this from her husband, but from his boss. She feels betrayed because of this and leaves her husband. When Alex is already in New York, Isabel files for divorce, which should be final in a few days. She also lies to him that she lost the child in a miscarriage .

Alex then travels to Mexico, where he learns from Isabel's great-grandmother that Isabel is on her way back to Las Vegas. The old woman says Isabel still loves him, but at the same time fears that the marriage, which is only held together by their child, has no future. On the way back, he meets Isabel on the street in the middle of Hoover Dam and discovers that, contrary to her testimony, she is still pregnant. She goes into labor on the dam and gives birth to the child just as the divorce becomes final. However, she wants to stay with Alex.

The last scene shows Isabel and Alex's wedding, which takes place near the Grand Canyon .

reception

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was "well done". He praised the performances of Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek and wrote that the film would be positively different from the other "disappointing" ("disappointing") comedies.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of February 14, 1997 that the film would live on the "energy of the performances", and he particularly praised that of Salma Hayek. He also liked that the main characters were opposites at the beginning of the film, which shouldn't really be the case in many comedies that are carried by the opposites of the characters. As an example, he cited days like this one with Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney .
