Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, known as the "Date Doctor", is a master of his field. He discreetly gives men help to get a first date with their loved ones. So also Albert Brennaman, who is in love with the rich and famous Allegra Cole, but as a tax advisor in the fourth row doesn't really have a chance with her. While he lets Hitch give him tips on how he can end up with her, he falls in love with Sara Melas, a gossip reporter . During her research into the relationship between Albert and Allegra, she finds out that Hitch is the "date doctor". She mistakenly thinks he supported a man who abused her best friend for a one-night stand and "out" him in her newspaper. Albert and Allegra's relationship is also in turmoil, as Allegra thinks Hitch manipulated Albert into liking him. Hitch meets with Allegra and clears up the misunderstanding, Albert and Allegra stay together. After a clarifying conversation, Sara and Hitch reconcile and become a couple.
