action
New York architect Melanie Parker spends the eve of her son Sammy's school trip on a Circle Line ship in Manhattan preparing for the next day. On the morning of that day, the journalist Jack Taylor , who also lives in Manhattan , is asked by his ex-wife, who has surprisingly married and wants to start her honeymoon immediately, to take care of their daughter Maggie for a week. In the hustle and bustle, he forgets, as instructed by his ex-wife, to inform Melanie Parker, who is still unknown to him, that he is bringing daughter Maggie to school and that she therefore does not have to pick her up. Melanie Parker waits in vain at Jack's door and therefore brings her son Sammy to the Westside Montessori School late . The school is already closed, all students are on their way. Shortly after her, Jack Taylor arrives with daughter Maggie. The children of the two do not like each other very much, and since Melanie now accuses Jack of being responsible for their delay, tensions also arise between the adults. Melanie thinks Jack is a reckless ladyboy, Jack thinks she is a pinched career woman.
The attempt to reach the excursion group with a taxi fails because Jack's decision also ends up on the wrong ship. So Melanie first decides - against Jack's suggestion - that both go to work accompanied by their children, which turns out to be problematic. Architect Melanie is supposed to present a project to new customers. Well-known journalist Jack Taylor has uncovered a corruption story in the New York City Council and published an article about why his newspaper is now to be sued. Separately, they decide to hand over their children to a day care center, where they meet again. When Melanie hears that drugs are supposedly circulating in the facility, she asks Jack to pick up both children and take turns to look after them with her. Additional confusion arises from the fact that Jack and Melanie accidentally swapped their identical cell phones.
While Jack takes care of the children, Melanie's son Sammy sticks a marble into his nostril, which is why he has to go to the pediatrician with him. Since he does not want to be considered irresponsible, the children should not tell Melanie anything about it. However, while Melanie, who would like to be perfect, takes care of the children, Jack's daughter Maggie is lost, but luckily she is found again a little later.
Jack can find more evidence of the corruption affair and present it at a press conference. Melanie supports him spontaneously. Melanie, on the other hand, has a meeting with customers just as she promised Sammy to attend a soccer game. She introduces the project to the customers, who are very impressed with it, but then says goodbye because she has to leave because of her son. Customers show understanding and tell their boss that they like his employee.
At the end of this exhausting day, Jack visits Melanie again unannounced in her apartment. She invites him in for a coffee, and later there is a gentle kiss. Melanie first wants to make herself pretty and asks Jack to wait for her in the living room. When Melanie comes out of the bathroom, Jack fell asleep. She lies down next to him and they both fall asleep on the sofa together.
