history
Buchanan County was formed on December 31, 1838 in the area that was added to the state of Missouri through the Platte Purchase .
After it was originally called Roberts County (after the settler Hiram Roberts), it was later named after James Buchanan (1791-1868), a former Secretary of State (1853-1856) and President (1857-1861) of the United States.
One place has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Hotel Patee House . A total of 62 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 5, 2018).
