The county is located in the Ozarks in southeast Missouri, is about 50 km from Arkansas in the south and has an area of 2,600 square kilometers.
The county is traversed by the Current River and its largest tributary, the Jacks Fork River .

Shannon County was formed in 1841. It was named after George Shannon , a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition .

According to the 2010 census , Shannon County had 8,441 people in 3,402 households. The population density was 3.2 people per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.47 people in each of the 3402 households.
